Brightspace Bites: Before Copying a Course
This article is part of a series of tips, tricks, and helpful bits of information on various Brightspace tools.
When a course is copied, the items copied from the previous course will import into the current course exactly as they were created in the previous course. This includes due dates, start and end dates, titles and names of modules, items, announcements and assessments, and item and category set up in Grades. Please be aware that if an instructor copies an entire course, the instructor must delete all copied content and activities before attempting to copy another course.
Before copying a course, check the following:
1. Ensure you identify the areas of the course you’d like to copy before copying. Decide if you need to copy the entire course (such as all content, activities, and grades) or if you need select components of the course. Select components can include content modules, files, specific assignments or quizzes, or grades. Once in Tools > Course Admin > Import/Export/Copy Components, and you’ve located the course code you’d like to copy from, ensure you select the appropriate button – Copy All Components or Select Components.
2. Ensure the current course is not set to active. Change it to inactive while you prepare the course content. It is located in Tools > Course Admin > Course Offering Information. Remember to return it to active when you are ready.
3. Ensure the current course hasn’t started yet. Check the start date located in Tools > Course Admin > Course Offering Information.
