Virtual Classroom: An Overview

Skills requirements are always changing and virtual classroom allows participants the opportunity to practice and enhance their skills in collaborative spaces online – moving away from a one-to-many video solution, to something more interactive and engaging.

Virtual Classroom is provided by our partner Bongo, and as a customer you automatically have access to the free version of it, and depending on your institution’s purchase agreement, maybe the premium version of it too.

What is a virtual classroom?

A Virtual Classroom mimics a face to face experience online, and is built on 4 core elements:

1. Live Learning: face to face activities online in real time, and live chat functionality to facilitate other conversations that mimic a real life group discussion.

2. Collaboration: Providing an online space for discussions, group projects, and allow participants to annotate uploaded documents using the whiteboard functionality.

3. Meeting Space: Use VC to enable face to face interaction online, including external participants (those outside of Brightspace) as well.

4. Interaction: Conduct polls, facilitate break-out activities, annotate content, and gather feedback to keep learners engaged.

Creating polls best practice: if not audibly asking a polling question, include your polling questions typed within your presentation or use the text annotation tool to type in questions when you’re ready to poll.

What’s the difference between the free and premium versions?

Have a look at the comparison checklist to see the difference between the free and premium offerings. Algonquin College uses the free version.
